Comics writers featured on NPR

Today's broadcast of NPR's Morning Edition new program featured a seven-minute feature on comics writers who are better known for the their work in other media. The piece by comics writer, novelist, and NPR contributor John Ridley focused on the work of Buffy creator Joss Whedon, novelist Jodi Picoult and rapper Percy Carey. You can listen at the link above.

I long for a day comics writers can get regular media coverage without being recognized for outside credits. That said, NPR's piece does a great job of showing that storytellers from a wide variety of backgrounds see comics as a valid, valuable medium to tell serious stories. Stories like these should advance the concept of comics as a legitimate platform in the minds of many non-comics readers.

I suspect that my daughter, who reads comics only sporadically, will be very excited to discover that Jodi Picoult is writing Wonder Woman. She recently discovered Picoult's novels and is busily consuming every word the author ever committed to paper.
